Mexico City, or La Ciudad de los Palacios translated as City of Palaces, is both the largest city and the capital of North America's Mexico. It began as an Aztec city, and then a major part of the Spanish Colonial Empire. It did not gain independence from Spain until the early nineteenth century. In terms of size, it is by far the largest metropolitan area in the Americas with only Tokyo and Seoul beating it in the world for size and density. Since the 1950's, the city has seen unrelenting growth with the population by the 1980's just shy of nine million citizens. Within the country, over half of all industrial jobs are contained with Mexico City. After the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake, which crippled the entire area by being an 8.1 on the Richter Scale, the city was forced to abandon the autocratic government that had maintained the populous since World War II. The first elected mayor was inaugurated in 1997.
