Sometime around 1820, the namesake Pigeon Forge was derived from a man name Isaac Love who built a iron forge along side the Pigeon River. At the time, the Cherokee indian flourished in the country. Essentially, Pigeon Forge was hunting territory for the Cherokee, But by 1785, the Cherokee indian chief signed a the Peace Treaty of Dumplin, ceding Sevier County over to the white man.

During the late nineteenth century, a health resort was built at Hernderson Springs which were thought to have healing properties. For years, high mountains ridges isolated Gatlinburg from the outside world. But Pigeon Forge located along US-441 would be the obvious target to draw touside business.

During the Centennial of the civil war, several attractions like the Rebel Railroad debuted in 1961 which helped to increase tourism in the area and later the Robbins brothers build a log flume shipped from New York. From the 1960's-1990's, several other successful theme-parks began to drive the economy including Silver Dollar City, Art Modell, Ozark, and Knoxville World's Fair.

By the 1990's factory outlets including Factory Merchants represented some 44% of the gross revenue in Pigeon Forge.

Today, Pigeon Forge, situated some 5 miles from the Great Smoky MOuntains National Park, keeps tourists busy from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Primarily a tourist resort, attractions include music theaters outlet malls, and Dollywood.
